History of the Lodge

Right at the end of a track, where the sky and the ocean merge into one, stands a wild, mysterious wooden hunting lodge. Sand dunes, a pine forest, a freshwater spring, endless shores, untamed waves, spray and sun… Two simple yet enchanting lodges, where Mother Nature reigns supreme.

1858

A former hunting lodge, built in 1858 by Baron Boulart, the magnate who owned the then brand-new Landes forest and who was also an explorer, the hamlet of Huchet is laid out around a large colonial-style house, two wooden houses, former boathouses, and a small chapel called “Estelle de la Mar”.

1908

Discovered in 1908 by the Italian poet Gabrielle Annunzio, the Huchet stream quickly became a meeting place for people of “knowledge and good taste”. In 1934, it was listed as a natural monument.

1981

Creation on September 29, 1981 of the Huchet Current National Nature Reserve, covering an area of 656 ha.

1997

The Guérard family fell for its charms and bought it in 1997, then restored the houses bearing in mind the way they originally used to be, and added their own magnificent collection of authentic furniture and paintings, dating back to the Indo-Chinese and Indo-Portuguese periods.

1999

The Beach House opens.
The lodges stand on the “lette”. This is a geographical curiosity – a depression between two hills of sand – which marks the border between the pine forest and the sand. The sea gardens around the houses offer views of a kind you’ll only find there, on the Landes coastline.

The PLACE

Between the Dune du Pila to the north, and the Bidassoa to the south of Hendaye, a 150-kilometer stretch of golden sandy beach, wild and unspoiled, hemmed in by the great pine forest of the Landes.

All along the coast, a number of small villages, including Moliets, Léon and Vielle-Saint-Girons, invite you to enjoy a vacation in the heart of nature.

THE LODGES

Set in a landscape of sea and sand, two luxury “huts ” for those of you who’re looking for adventure. The wood is washed clean by the spray from the outside and there are red lacquer cupboards, old earthenware jars and opium tables indoors.

Our two lodges cover an area of around 120 m² and are made up of :

  • a vast lounge with a fireplace and coffee-making facilities
  • an intimate bedroom facing out over the sand dunes
  • a large bathroom with patinated floor tiles
